As I photographed JB Hut nestled amongst the nearby snow gums and summer wildflowers, the sun was setting and nearby campers were enjoying their evening meals. It was a perfect way to end the day in the Victorian High Country.
Summer is a great time to explore the Victorian High Country. Without winter snow, a variety of old tracks and trails access some of Australia's best views, unique flora and fauna and some of the regions richest history, including many remaining alpine huts. Steeped in history and set in beautiful natural landscapes, High Country huts have played an important role in the recent European history of Australia's alpine region. The present JB Hut ('JB' was Jim Brown, one of two stockmen who were reputedly the first non Aboriginal people to venture onto the Bogong High Plains in 1851) was a forest hut from the Swifts Creek forestry region. During all seasons of the year, this hut and the surrounding area offer a beautiful sanctuary, both from inclement weather and as an escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.
