The Australian outback contains an assortment of quirky pubs, old ruins, fascinating characters, enduring landscapes and endless yarns. It evokes a spirit of exploration and freedom with its wide open spaces and ever changing skies. With these old ruins before me and the approaching storm about to bear down on me, it was hard not to reflect on the pioneering spirit of the early European settlers in the often harsh Australian outback. In those early days the outback remained largely unknown to the first settlers.
It had been an afternoon of completely wild weather with massive downpours followed by calm breaks. I was sure something special would happen at sunset. This storm front created the opportunity to capture some of the settler history of the outback while also conveying the hardship the early settlers had to endure.
